What is Periodontology?

What does periodontology do?

Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that studies the health of the tissues surrounding the teeth (gums, dentin, and connective tissue). Periodontists diagnose and treat gum diseases, helping to prevent problems such as gum recession, inflammation, and infection.

Since damage to the supporting tissues around the teeth can lead to tooth loss, periodontal treatment is crucial for both dental and overall health. Periodontists help patients maintain healthy teeth for longer by detecting and treating gum disease in its early stages. They also perform surgical treatments to promote gum and bone healing in more advanced stages of gum disease.

A periodontist utilizes the science of periodontology to treat oral and dental health problems affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth. Periodontists treat the following areas within the mouth:

Gingiva: The gums
Periodontal ligament: A group of connective tissue fibers that connect your teeth to your jawbone
Cementumen: A thin, bony layer of tissue covering the tooth roots
Alveolar bone: The part of the jawbone where the tooth sockets are located

Periodontists treat problems including tartar removal, periodontal care, root canal repair, and various types of periodontal surgery.

What are the ways to prevent periodontal disease?

To reduce and prevent periodontitis problems, you can use the following methods:

Brush your teeth twice a day or after every meal.
Use a soft toothbrush and replace it at least every three months.
Use an electric toothbrush, which can be more effective in removing plaque and tartar.
Don’t forget to floss every day.
Use mouthwash to help reduce plaque between your teeth.
Have regular professional dental cleanings according to the schedule recommended by your dentist.
Do not smoke or use tobacco products.

What diseases does periodontology deal with?

Periodontology deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the specified diseases and protects oral health by applying the necessary care procedures for healthy gums.

Gingivitis (Gum Inflammation): Manifests as inflammation, bleeding, swelling, and sensitivity in the gums. It usually occurs due to poor oral hygiene. It is treatable in the early stages, but if left untreated, it can lead to more serious problems.
Periodontitis (Gum Disease): An advanced form of gingivitis, it causes damage to the bone and tissues around the teeth. It can lead to tooth loss. Periodontitis develops as a result of the spread of gum inflammation.
Gum Recession: The receding of the gums exposes the tooth roots. This condition, which usually increases with age, can be a symptom of periodontal disease.

  • Tooth Root Infection: Infections can develop in the tooth roots, which can be a result of periodontitis. It damages the tissues under the gums. Gum Swelling and Pain: As gum disease progresses, swelling, pain, and infections can occur. This happens as a result of bacteria accumulating in the gums. Bad Breath (Halitosis): Periodontal disease can lead to bad breath. This can be a symptom of gum disease. Periodontal Bone Loss: As periodontitis progresses, bone loss occurs in the bone structure under the gums. This can lead to loosening and loss of teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

The duration of periodontological treatment varies from person to person, ranging from 3 weeks to 6 months. For successful treatment, smoking, tobacco products, and alcohol should be avoided. Additionally, diabetes, chronic diseases, and radiation exposure are factors that can affect the treatment process.

Gum recession can occur due to brushing too hard, gum disease, or improperly done fillings/crowns. Treatment primarily involves eliminating the underlying cause of the recession. If it is aesthetically bothersome, the receding area can be covered with a “gum graft” (tissue transfer from another area).

Yes, they are very closely related. The bacteria that cause gum disease produce foul-smelling sulfur compounds in the mouth. It’s impossible to eliminate bad breath simply by using mouthwash or chewing gum without treating gum inflammation.

Loose teeth indicate that the bone holding the tooth is eroding (periodontitis). However, not every loose tooth needs to be extracted. Modern periodontal treatments, laser applications, and bone grafting can restore the health of the tissues surrounding loose teeth, extending the tooth’s lifespan.

Gum disease, characterized by chronic inflammation and bacterial infection in the gums that can enter the bloodstream, triggers systemic inflammation and negatively impacts cardiovascular health. Periodontal inflammation, in particular, can contribute to plaque buildup in blood vessel walls and increase the risk of atherosclerosis.

Gum disease can recur after treatment if proper oral hygiene is not maintained. Regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings can prevent recurrence.
